A Tribute in Balm, Oils, and Childhood Memories
This series of digital illustrations is a love letter from Jess to her late grandmother — and to the Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) remedies her grandmother swore by. Growing up, her granny was the household healer, armed with an arsenal of oils, balms, pills, and plasters that could seemingly fix anything: a scraped knee, a sprained ankle, a bad tummy, or a stubborn mosquito bite.
She didn’t just apply ointment — she passed down rituals. Each product in this collection is more than just packaging; it’s a memory of her grandmother’s hands at work, of strong herbal smells in the air, and of that quiet belief that healing could be found in old-school cures.
Now that her grandmother is gone, these illustrations have become Jess’ way of keeping her spirit alive. Through art, Jess reimagines the graphic nostalgia of TCM products in her own visual language — bold, offbeat, and rooted in reverence. It’s a tribute to the woman who taught Jess that care could be passed down, that love had a scent, and that art, like medicine, can soothe more than just the skin.
Below are the digitally illustrated copies that will be translated into painting.
